Pellet cookers in general have a very mild smoke profile, they are efficient with thier fuel use, and run about the cleanest fire you can get. Oddly, when I got to cook on a Jambo.. it also runs a super clean fire. You cook with a small fire (insulated firebox), it burns hot and clean, so you also get a very light smoke profile with these cookers as well. pretty cool.
We all know about Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone, but Traeger is the true pioneer of pellet smoking. This company introduced the first pellet smokers, and it remains the best-known brand, although competition is growing. There’s nothing fancy here. Instead of a touch-pad controller, Traeger employs an older-style digital dial controller. No WiFi or meat probes; just no-frills schmokin’ from the industry leader.
Some beneficial features that this model includes are that it is lightweight, small, and has legs that fold away for easy transportability. The grill grates are constructed from 3/16 in stainless steel rod and also includes a stainless steel ten gauge fire pot. With the interior of this grill you will also find that it includes a stainless steel fourteen gauge heat deflector, a stainless steel fourteen gauge drip pan, and a high quality ceramic ignition system.
A good spring cleaning of your pellet smoker is going to take a little elbow grease. Remember to use non-toxic degreasers and cleansers like Simple Green. We use it at our house as we, like the author of this article, have dogs who seem to love to be around the process of cleaning a pellet smoker.
I got the bird loaded onto the pellet grill and let it ride until it hit the desired temperature. Because the Memphis Pro’s temperature control automatically drops the unit down to its lowest setting once it reaches the programmed internal meat temperature, there was absolutely no chance of overcooking that baby.
If you have an older smoker and need a lot of physical maintenance like changing the hopper and the digital control, then changing those two parts may not help. These two changes may cost you $200 – $250 and with a rusty hopper, you will continuously lose the smoke you produce. This is not safe for your health, so in this situation, you should definitely opt to get a new pellet smoker grill.
A few other mentionable features are that it has a highly durable temperature proof textures powder coat finish, it features auto start. The REC TEC Wood Pellet Grill accommodates temperatures from 180 degrees Fahrenheit to 500 degrees Fahrenheit with 5 degrees increment. By opening the lid you cause the heat to quickly escape. Remember that the most important thing is to always maintain a fixed temperature inside the grill. With this solution, you can easily control the meat’s temperature without losing the heat inside the grill.
I am glad your review of the Rec Tec included commentary on the accuracy and performance of the temperature controller. I would have liked to read similar comments about the other five grills in your reviews because this is such an important feature.
When reviewing products for our Top 10 lists we put ourselves in the shoes of the customer and look at the kinds of questions that you might ask when making a fairly costly purchase. If you haven’t made up your mind on electric vs pellet smokers, then you can read our Electric Smoker Reviews here.
Pellets are made from different woods, each of which imparts a distinctive flavor to the meat. Hickory, oak, maple, alder, apple, cherry, hazelnut, peach, and mesquite are among the flavors available. For more about pellets, read my article, The Science of Wood. There is a pretty good forum for people who have pellet cookers at PelletSmoking.com and of course our Pitmaster Club has a lively discussion on them with many active users.
Because a PID controller constantly measures its temperature and adjusts its pellet feed to meet the desired temperature, it maintains its temperature just as well in cold weather as under perfect conditions.
Rating: This is an 8.5 out of 10 grill. It could’ve gotten a higher rating or at least a rating like its sibling Pit Boss, but too many quality control complaints brought its rating down many notches.
On the other hand, if you purchase a cooker that has all the bells and whistles, but you never use them, you will have wasted your hard earned cash when a more basic cooker, that cost less, would likely have done the trick.
PID Controller – one of the best controllers. Precisely maintains the temperature you set at intervals of +/- 5 degrees. Perfect when it comes to long and slow meat smoking at low temperatures. You can leave such a pellet grill for the entire day without worries and forget about it. When coming back after many hours, you’re sure that your meat has been cooked at the fixed temperature that you set.
I also love the automatic light feature – it eliminated the hassle I went through when lighting my previous grill, the Weber Kettle BBQ. The grill also comes with two meat probes, which allow you to prepare two different meals while monitoring the progress of both probes simultaneously.
It can easily cope with up to 60lbs of meat at a time, which is three or four entire turkeys or multiple full racks of ribs, so no matter how many people you have over or amount of food you need, this has it handled.
The Camp Chef Woodwind Pellet Grill was chosen as our second choice because it lacks some capabilities of the PG24. The grill is rather heavy, at an overall weight of 146lbs. The contrasts with the PG24 which is 124lbs. The PG24 also contains a shutdown feature that gives the user more flexibility. This allows the grill to do more of the cooking for you. Lastly, the Woodwind pellet grill is more expensive then the PG24. The PG24 is overall a better bang for your buck.
There are no food probes with this controller as there are on the MAK Pellet Boss, and the controller is mounted to the surface with two screws and no gasket so I fear rain could get into the electronics, but after more than a year of sitting out without the cover in rain and snow, the controller on the IPT I tested is still working fine. Ortech recommends covering your smoker.
Definitely the number one for me. Plenty of built-in features that are there to make the cooking process easier plus a big cooking surface. It’s a smoker that will give your food a really great smoked flavor.
The Camp Chef ticks all the boxes you would expect from a pellet grill at this mid price point. You’ll enjoy the set it and forget it style cooking, clean flavor and minimal ash to clean up. All of the main parts are built with heavy gauge stainless steel and feel sturdy.
Cleaning up is a huge part of the grilling experience that no one likes to think about. Take comfort in knowing this grill has a simple and easy clean out process. The grill contains a patented clean out container that simply requires you to twist and dump. No need to take apart the grill here!
Hey Jimmy, thanks for commenting here about your experience. I’m sorry to hear your experience was less than optimal. I have only cooked on the Traeger pro models. I do know that it is good practice to vacuum out the burn pot after cooks of a few hours or more. Not sure this was where your problems were initiated. Did you contact Traeger support? If so, what was their response?
While traditional offset smokers rely on beefy construction to hold and maintain their heat, pellet grills rely on their digital controller. A really good controller can accurately maintain the temperature on just about any pellet grill, regardless of its construction. So, if you’re looking at a heavy-duty pellet grill, you may be paying for extra steel you don’t actually need.
The ShippingPass assortment is continually being optimized. Products are added and removed for lots of reasons, but the main reason is to show items that we’re 100% sure we can deliver within the promised timeline.
Pellet cookers usually have an auger or another feed mechanism that pushes the pellets into a burn pot typically about the size of a beer can ripped in half. An igniter rod sits in the bottom of the pot and when you turn on the grill it glows like the element on an electric stove.
Now we come to the part no one likes and that’s cleaning. This smoker won’t clean itself but it does make the process a lot easier. Camp Chef PG24 Pellet Grill is designed to give you easy access to the fire pot making cleaning out the ash effortless. It also has a trap door which allows you to clean the unit without digging through the grease and ash. Anyone who has ever had to clean a smoker grill knows how time-consuming and enormous the task can be. A trap door like this is only present in higher priced units, but you’ll be glad you paid a little more when cleaning becomes effortless.
With a REC TEC Wood Pellet Grill on your deck, indoor cooking can become the exception and not the rule. Having the same problem as the rest of the group. Rec Tec, Yoder, Green Mountain, Pellet Pro, or MAK? All seem to be heavy gauge SS, Pellet Pro seems really good value, MAK and Green Mountain seem to have controllers with more features. Have a friend who bought Rec Tec 3 years ago, he cannot say enough about the good customer service and the grill. If you could only buy one (money not the issue among these 5), which one, and why?
The taste of meat cooked on a pellet grill can be outstanding. However, some recent medical studies have suggested a link between eating smoked or grilled meat, and a risk of developing some types of cancer, the most notable being pancreatic cancer.
You can sear on some pellet grills, but they are the minority. It’s generally accepted you need cook at a minimum of 500°F in order to sear. Because most pellet grills are primarily indirect cookers that top out at 400-425°F, they are not particularly good for searing. However, there are some pellet grills that can reach 500-700°F, as well as some that offer direct grilling options that allow you to sear meat over an open flame.
This pellet grill has been designed for those who want the convenience of heating up their gas grill quickly. Though gas grills heat up very fast, they are not the best choice as far as palatable flavor is concerned. However, Louisiana Pellet Grill can light up very fast and get your food ready in 30 minutes. The food quality produced by a pellet grill burning pure, natural hardwood cannot be achieved by any charcoal or gas grill. Hence, Louisiana Pellet Grill provides a great flavor to your steaks, burgers and it smokes.
Speaking of competition cooks, you’ll find that many competition BBQ pitmasters who use Pellet grills as their primary means of cooking are among the more well rested come Saturday. The next step we’ll cover in this selection of Pellet Grill Reviews is getting your pellet grill / smoker up and running. Again, what you may not see in may Pellet Grill Reviews is repeated mention that you’re not going to get that “deep smoke” flavor profile using a pellet smoker. Though, this can be achieved by using something like the Amazen Pellet Tube Smoker 12″.
This is really a good smoking equipment that you can opt for amongst the various wood pellet grills in the market today. It features an automatic heating which means all you will have to do is simply press a button and the grill will heat up to the desired temperature on its own. The good thing is that once the grill achieves the desired temperature it maintains throughout the cooking session. The other impressive feature that you will like with pellet smoker is the fact that its flower pot has got a blower fan with a heat deflector to help prevent hot spots on the meat that is being cooked.
